Day 1. (Sun) - São Luiz
São Luiz is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating places in Brazil. Walking through the streets, climbing the hills and turning the corners of the old city, you’ll find yourself transported to the colonial times and find out for yourself why, although it was founded by the French, São Luiz is the “most portuguese of the brazilian cities. Morning visit to D. Pedro II Square, Historic Center, Leões Palace and “La Ravardiere”, Justice Palace, Catedral, Churches of “São João”, “Rosário dos Pretos”, “Da Anunciação”, “Santo Antônio” and “Remédios”, Cristo Rei Palace, Culture Center and Mercês.
Day 2. (Mon) - São Luiz / Alcântara
The city of Alcântara on the other side of the São Marcos bay is also a great local port, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to another time. There you can admire wonderfull residential buildings, Churches and monuments, testimony of another era. In Alcântara you can see the street paved with original cobble stones imported from Portugal, many mansions and colonial houses, the “Pelourinho” (a column where slaves where publicly punished), the local prison, and ruins.
Day 3. (Tues) - São Luiz / Barreirinhas (Lençóis Park Lagoon)
The word “nature” has a new dimension when you’re in Maranhão. The “Parque dos Lençóis” is actually a great place to start your outdoor adventure. Imagine thousands of crystal clear lakes of all colors and shades spreading throughout hundreds of kilometers of white sandy dunes. In that setting you’ll probably experience the most unforgettable dive of your life. We go through the city of Barreirinhas to get to the dunes.
Day 4. (Weds) - Barreirinhas
Morning we will take a boat tour of the preguiças river. Throughout, you’ll notice the manguezais, the typical local vegetation that provides nutrients and harbor for thousands of species of fish, crustacean, and many other local animal species.
Day 5 (Thurs) - Barreirinhas / Delta das Américas / Ilha do Caju
At the “Delta das Americas” you’ll be able to hop into a boat and wander though hundred of islands formed by the encounter of the Parnaíba river and the sea. Among these islands are the famous “Ilha do Caju” and “Ilha das Canarias”. Stop for a swin in the lakes in the dunes and beaches with walks through the mangroves. A crab supper on board. Overnight on the Ilha do Caju.
Day 6. (Fri) - Ilha do Caju
You will find an area of unique beauty, aggregating over 70 island between two states Igarapés (Small wood rivers) forming real labyrinths, carnauva palm trees, mangroves, amazing dunes and desert beaches, besides a rich fauna. Nothing matches the emotion of getting to know all this personally. The artistic drawing of nature, plenty of inspiration and exotic features made the Parnaíba river delta the only in the Americas located in the open sea, and the third largest in the planet.
Day 7. (Sat) - Ilha do Caju / Parnaíba
Breakfast at the hotel and rest of the day free for personal activities. Take advantage of the trips organized by the local agencies and get to know this habitat, which is unique in the americas. The natural landscape inebriates visitors. The harmony of the lagoons and the only open-sea Delta of the Americas offers the scenery vivid tones. Evening departure by boat to Parnaíba. Overnight.
Day 8. (Sun) - Parnaíba
Piauí has the most warming people of Brazil. Piaui is today the door to ecological, cultural and historic tourism. A sun shining all the year round and clear sky luminosity give Piauí an Ever-lasting vision of the brazilian colors in its water, lands, climate and hopes. Parnaíba is attractive for its cozy climate, for its rich handicraft and for its Porto das Barcas Historic Center.
Day 9. (Mon) - Parnaíba / Sete Cidades
Morning departure to Seven Cities National Park, where formations and paintings in ancient rocks are worth visiting. Located in the municipalities of Piripiri, Brasileira and Piracuruca, the park has seven cities - with traces of the Pre-Historic man and fantastic legends, made up by the ancestors of local people. Overnight in the Park.
Day 10. (Tues) - Sete Cidades.
Breakfast then departure to explore the Seven Cities National Park. From the entrance to the park, you can visit stones with names such as Elefante (Elephant), Tartaruga (Turtle), Camelo (Camel), Soldado Romano (Roman Soldier) Polegar de Deus (God’s Thumb), as well as others less well known. These stones form the ensemble of “Sete Cidades”. Rupestrian inscriptions can also be found on some rocks, such as the stone known as “Ponte” (Bridge). The geological characteristics were originated by springs which feed the sources of several rivers in the region. Overnight at the hotel.
Day11. (Weds) - Sete Cidades / Ubajara / Jericoacoara
Morning to Ubajara, an oasis with a mild climate in the heart of the brazilian northeast. The region of hills and plateaus in Ceará will leave nature lovers or radical sports enthusiasts simply ecstatic with its exuberant forest, river sources, waterfalls, caves and plenty of fresh air. Visit the grotto. Then on to Jericoacoara.
Day 12 (thurs) 13. (Fri) - Jericoacoara
Jericoacoara is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, where fisherman cast nets for fish and ahrimps, as well as lobster fishing. There are also mangroves with their crabs and fauna just as rich as the handicrafts of the lacemakers with their hammocks, tablecloths and decorative pieces of unparalleled beauty and quality. You will find a beach of unique beauty, aggregating exuberant coconut groves, white sandy beach and reddish dunes which welcome the lazy warm waves into their natural coves.
Day 14. (Sat) - Jericoaroara / Lagoinha / Fortaleza
Morning departure to Lagoinha. Situated 104km from Fortaleza, in the municipality of Paraipaba, Lagoinha is one of the major attractions of the “Route of the Setting Sun”. An old hideaway of French pirates, Lagoinha is a tranquil fishing colony sited on a viewpoint, from where one can appreciate the exuberant coconut groves, the white sandy beach and reddish dunes which welcome the lazy waves into their natural coves. The bars and restaurants affer optional trips in combined with boats which take tourists to Lagoa das Almécegas (Lake of the Almécegas). In late afternoon we proceed to Fortaleza.
Day 15. (Sun) - Fortaleza / City Tour
Morning visit to the city including: the coast road with the Iracema Meireles and do Futuro beaches; the Art and Popular Culture Museum, the Anthropological Museum, Cultural Metropolitano (Metropolitan Culture Centre), Fortaleza Nossa Senhora (XVII Century), the José de Alencar Theatre and the Tourism Centre, where it is not possible to resist the purchase of local artisan craft in wood, ceramic, “fillet” and “labyrinth” lace work.
